About

I was born in Leeds back in the dark old year of 1975, although both my parents are Scottish, so I have a bit of geographical schizophrenia when it comes to where I’m from! When I am in Scotland, I’m Scottish, and when I am in England, I’m English (just don’t tell my parents!)

I have run an internet solutions company called Select Performers since 2003. It is a family business and we offerweb design, hosting, management and promotion (including search engine optimisation) services. As well as being into allthings ‘techy’ I am also a professionalmusician; both a singer (lyric baritone) and a teacher.

I would describe myself more as a developer, but I do a bit of everything. I write XHTML, CSS, PHP, MYSQL and javaScript. I’m passionate about web standards and producing usable no-fuss web sites.

After reading music at the University of Durham, I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Neil Howlett and received a Masters in Performance. I’ve sung in many choirs including the University of Durham Chamber Choir and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain with broadcasts on Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as many recordings and performances throughout the world.

When it comes to singing I’ve sung oratorio throughout the UK with performances including Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Brahms’ Requiem, Bach’s St. John Passion and the B Minor Mass. I’ve sung Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs at Manchester Cathedral, and Carmina Burana at the Liverpool Philarmonic Hall.

Other notable appearances include Spitalfields Festival in London with the RNCM Baroque Ensemble, and as soloist on the BBC Daily Service. I sung the “Beast” with Opera North’s education project “Beauty and the Beast” composed by Daniel Marsh. Recent concerts include Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater (in Polish) with the Manchester University Chorus, a recital with pianist Andrew Wilde, Carmina Burana in Monmouth, the Messiah with the Manchester Bach Choir, Rossini’s Petite Messe Sollenelle in the Isles of Scilly and a recital at the Emmanuel Concert Series in Loughborough. In 2005 I performed the world premiere of my Helen Seddon-Gray’s ‘Craving for Spring’ for baritone and orchestra with the University of Manchester Sinfonietta. Helen Seddon-Gray also happens to be my wife!

I teach at singing at the Junior RNCM, Manchester Grammar School and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls.
