Ah, I couldn’t find those options under settings because my account is an Exchange account … no advanced tab
Still option 2, Airplane mode, did work.

I couldn’t find the options under settings as described, probably everything changed under IOS5.

Another option, in the original article was to put your phone into Airplane mode then delete the mail items. That worked for me.
